The Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena combines expertise in life, material, optical and computational sciences to elevate microbiome studies from descriptive to hypothesis-driven and functional analyses. Our core mission is to elucidate fundamental principles of the interactions and functions in microbial communities in diverse habitats ranging from oceans and ground water to plant and human hosts. The affiliated early career program of the Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) offers an ambitious, structured and interdisciplinary post-graduate training based on top-level fundamental research.
We are curently offering postdoctoral and doctoral researcher positions. We are seeking motivated and engaging candidates who strive to collaborate widely and look beyond traditional disciplines to further our mission.

We are looking for a doctoral researcher to analyse the transcriptomes of different, clinically relevant strains of K. pneumoniae both when grown under standard conditions, as well as when in contact with host cells and within defined microbial communities.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to elucidate the systems behavior of concrete multipartite systems of microorganisms in the human lung, by using methods of theoretical Systems Biology.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to identify the RNA repertoire of host-derived extracellular vesicles in response to fungal infections and to investigate the potential of host-derived RNA as diagnostics for fungal infection.

The Microverse Imaging Center offers support in biomedical imaging to the members of the Cluster of Excellence Balance of the Microverse and other researchers in Jena. The successful candidate will focus on supporting the users in training and assisting microscope usage and helping to run the facility.

The concerted efforts in the Cluster generate a diversity of data from microbial consortia in various habitats. Within the Cluster of Excellence, a junior research group will be established focusing on the development of methods and tools for the identification of cause-effect relations.
