An Enzyme Makes Mushrooms “Magical”

New study sheds light on the structure and evolution of an enzyme in psychoactive fungi An international research team has investigated the biosynthesis of psilocybin, the main ingredient of hallucinogenic mushrooms. They gained new insights into the structure and reaction mechanism of the enzyme PsiM. It plays a key role in the production of psilocybin. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications. The psychoactive substance psilocybin is the most important natural product of so-called “magic mushrooms” of the genus Psilocybe, which makes these mushrooms a popular drug. 10th International Conference on Microbial Communication for Young Scientists.

The MiCom is a great platform to encourage discussions between young scientists and experts from all fields of research related to microbial communication. The conference traditionally consists of five chaired sessions, each containing outstanding keynote lectures and a number of selected student talks.
