Christian Eggeling wins award for his development of a new kind of optical microscopy technique to investigate molecular dynamics of lipids in the plasma membrane of living cells.

By applying Fluorescence-Correlation-Spectroscopy (FCS) on a super-resolution Stimulated-Emission-Depletion (STED) microscope he was able to disclose anomalous molecular diffusion dynamics which were previously hidden by the limited spatial resolution of FCS when utilized on conventional diffraction-limited microscopes
