Abstract

Zeolitic carrier materials offer ion release and uptake functionality for a wide range of applications. The release kinetics are controlled by the mobility of the target species within the zeolite framework and at its surface. Here, we achieve control over the release dynamics and the quantity of released Co2+ ions from a faujasitic zeolite through mechanical amorphization of the zeolite framework. We identify a two-step reaction mechanism in which ion release and reintegration compete on short and intermediate timescales. The competition between these two processes is governed by the degree of amorphization, with a timescale ranging from a few minutes to several days.
